IS bride Lisa Smith has told her family “I’m OK, we’re fine” after the Irishwoman and her two-year old-daughter were detained by Turkish militants in Syria.

Smith, who joined IS in September 2015, is now being held along with hundreds of other wives and children of IS by the Turkish backed fighters in Tel Abyad Northern Syria.

In a message sent back to her family in Ireland on Thursday, the 38-year-old from Co Louth says she doesn’t know what her captors are planning to do with her.

She said: “It’s me Lisa. How are you? We’re OK. I don’t know what’s happening. I don’t know what’s going on.”

Smith along with hundreds of ISIS members fled the Ain Issa camp after fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces left their positions following an offensive by Turkey backed militants.

In the recording, Smith tells her family that they left the tented camp and walked up to 15 kilometres across the Sahara.

Smith stated she was with other foreign women who walked north from the camp in Ain Issa accompanied by fighters believed to be from the jihadist group Ahrar Al Sharqiya.

Lisa said: “I don’t know what they’re going to do with us. They were supposed to hand us over to Turkey and I’m just waiting to see what’s happening.

“We’re hearing loads of stories about everything that’s going on but we’re fine. OK we’re fine. Just wait for me to text you.

“If you can gather information and keep on top of things from your end to see where we are and how we are all the time to see what’s going on. That would be good. OK. I’ll talk to you soon.”

Turkey could potentially try Smith or keep her in detention for a significant period of time.

The Turkish government currently hold “Jihadi Paul” a member of the brutal “beatles” gang who was sentenced to seven years in prison after being detained in Istanbul.
